The Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline is is one of Brazil's most complex energy project, whose structure has required a large volume of resources so far. The pipeline grid, involving a total cost of around US$ 2 billion, crosses 3,150 km through the States of Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, to consolidate the process of integrating Latin America's power generation.
The pipeline route was studied in depth, using satellites and Ibama's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA/Rima), strictly in accordance with environmental preservation. Advanced engineering techniques were an essential part of the pipeline's construction when going under rivers, across farmland and highways, through 135 Brazilian towns.
By 2007, 30 million cubic meters of natural gas will be carried and consumed daily. This demand will mean the installation of thermoelectricity plants on a number of new sites. The State of São Paulo alone should absorb half the total capacity of the gas pipeline. The supply agreement with Bolivia is for a 20-year term and may be renewed.
